have always admired and respected Etree but could you please let us know what the .... is going on? Please read (or re-read) this. It's the official answer of what happened. http://www.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=47634 "the Internet Archive has been asked to change how the Grateful Dead concert recordings are being distributed on the Archive site" This is why the Soundboard recordings are gone, and why the Audience recordings are only streamable. Reinstating open exchange of the Dead's music would be wonderful, but an explanation or even acknowledgement of whence this cold shower would be really very welcome. Nobody at archive.org knows "why" this request was made, so continually posting this question to the forum here pointed toward etree.org or archive.org will not bear fruit. Nobody here was involved in the decision making process. By this point, it should be obvious that the people who did make the request had no intention of explaining themselves, and do not feel obligated to do so right now. There are pages and pages (and pages) of speculation that may answer this "why". Everyone's frustration with the situation is completely understandable (heck, I've been frustrated as hell with this too and will miss the downloads as much as anyone. I took it for granted that they would be here indefinitely as well), but unfortunately we cannot offer you any additional explanation than what you find on the forum. Sorry.

Brad...well said and there's nothing else to do. Hopefully the situation will change. Thank you for your honesty and the Archives perspective. I really trust Deadheads will honor it.

best....Howard

Brad, at this point I don't think anyone is asking the archive anymore. The band put the archive in this position.

I can certainly understand the LMA is sick of being asked why....with so many asking i would get sick of it too....so if there is no fruit to askng why...then may I ask who or what entity requested the change...the band members...the mgt....or perhaps a relative of a member...this would certainly point all questions in the right direction forward.

I would also like to say I feel to Diane H. as she seems to have had her hands full with all of this issue... I am sure she knows that it is hard for so many who were reconnected to a lifestyle (also known as the Grateful Dead) to have it abruptly stopped again. (be it ten years later.) Thank you Diane for you tolerance.

I'm a Deadhead too, I feel your pain. Also, I feel the pain of poor "Margaret" at the GDM front desk. From the reaction that is being posted here I can only imagine what she has to hear over the phone there.

Again, another fruitless question to ask here. Sorry.

Brad,

Can you say exactly who contacted you regarding the new policy.
Was it the band and their management or was it a record label?
In other words was the Dead still in control when the change was requested or not?

Unfortunately I cannot. I don't know, was not involved in this, and the people who were have been asked to limit what they say. As I said before, all we know is here on the forum posted by Matt Vernon and Brewster Kahle.

Yeah I just want to know who made this choice. Gimme names, don't placate me and hide behind hide-a-bles.
